A webshop already carries product duties, from safety details in the listing to proof for green claims. A passport does not replace your listing. It gives each product one page behind a QR code, one set of operator details and a place for the evidence behind what you say.

What applies now.

Rules that already apply, whatever your plans for a passport.

Since 13 December 2024

Safety information in the listing

Under the General Product Safety Regulation, online listings must show the manufacturer’s name and postal and electronic address, the EU responsible person where the manufacturer is outside the EU, product identification and warnings or safety information. This has to be in the listing itself. A link to a passport does not replace it.

Green claims need proof

EU countries must apply the green claims rules of Directive (EU) 2024/825 from this date. Generic environmental claims such as “eco-friendly” are banned unless you can show recognised excellent environmental performance, and so are sustainability labels that are not based on a certification scheme or set by public authorities. There is no exemption for small businesses.

A product sheet in France, for larger brands

Producers with a turnover above €10 million that place more than 10,000 units a year on the French market must publish a product sheet on environmental characteristics, on a dedicated web page in a machine-readable format. Both thresholds apply together, and the rule covers clothing, furniture, electronics and many other categories.

What comes later.

Passport rules arrive product group by product group. Dates for rules that are not adopted yet are indicative.

From about 2029

Passports reach the shop

Once a passport rule applies to a product group, the company that places the product on the market must give dealers and online marketplaces the QR code or product identifier, free of charge and within 5 working days at most. For consumer products, textiles are among the first expected, from about mid or late 2029.

What it does not do

Polarpass does not:

  • decide which rules apply to you, or certify compliance;
